When you’ve been bitten by the wanderlust bug, the rawest kind, it’s hard to shake off that adventurous voice rattling away at the back of your head, the one that tells you to do this old-school style. We’re talking about a trip to some far-flung place you’ve never been before with nothing but a couple of paper maps, a compass, satellite phone, walking boots and a large flask of water. That’s the sort of crazy real adventure we would love to dive into.

But while these sort of experiences exist (cough, IGO Adventures), there are some things we need in our scabbard before we embark on a global trip of some kind. We’re not just talking about your passport or credit card here either. No. We’re talking about your smartphone, the most essential travel tool there is.

How so?

Simple. When you have a smartphone, you also have the chance to download and carry some of the best travel apps ever imagined. Trust us: your next trip is going to be a hell of a lot easier.

1.Hopper Hops On The Good Foot

The most expensive part of travel these days is the flights. It just is. That’s why we all scan Skyscanner for weeks and weeks before finally committing to the best deal, which only makes us curse the skies when we see our flight being sold for half the price a fortnight later. That’s where Hopper saves the day (read: saves your money). You tell it your travel plans and it tells you when the best time to book is.

2. Lounge Like A High Roller

There is something about early morning travels, long waits in airports and long distance flights that can really sap the energy out of you, which is why your eyes always wander over to the people kicking back in the executive lounges, envy filling inside you. Complimentary food, drinks, super-sofas, showers, everything. Well, get LoungeBuddy and you can buy entrance to almost any lounge for a one-time fee. Traveling just got fun again.

3. The Taxi That’s Better Than A Taxi

Whether or not we agree with them as companies, we all use Uber and Lyft. It’s having all the benefits of a taxi service but for near enough public transport prices. That’s why we all have one of these apps in our pocket and, if you haven’t, you need to head to www.ridester.com and pick the one that suits your preferences better. Either way, you’re in for a treat. You can even book speedboats and helicopters too, depending on where in the world you have shot off to.

4. Speak The Language

Nobody expects you to become wholly proficient or utterly fluent in a language before you arrive at your vacation destination, but it’s still wise to at least try and learn some of the languages, not just because a basic understanding of signs and phrases and what not will make your adventure that much more amazing. What’s more, get the Duolingo app and you can start learning new languages in the most entertaining way possible: via a game.
